MILLIGAN – As part of Milligan University’s fall Faculty Lecture Series, Dr. Christine Browning, professor of counseling and director of the campus counseling center, will present a lecture titled “Beyond the Wound: Trauma across the Lifespan.”
The lecture will be held in the university’s Gregory Center on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 5:30 p.m.
Browning’s lecture will outline the three components of trauma before focusing on the importance of children’s wellbeing and the effects of childhood trauma across the lifespan.
“Studies show that adverse childhood experiences can result in health and mental health problems, relationship difficulties, an inability to trust, and can be problematic for a child’s education, attention span and social development” says Browning. “More teachers and counselors are being trained in trauma-informed care to help support children, and this support, even from a family member or neighbor, makes a big difference.”
Browning is a licensed professional counselor, mental health service provider, approved supervisor and a nationally certified counselor. She received her doctorate in counselor education and supervision from the University of Mississippi, her master’s and education specialist degrees from the University of Memphis and a bachelor’s degree from Crichton College. In addition, Browning holds certificates in narrative-focused trauma care through The Allender Center at the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology and currently serves as an Allender Center fellow.
Browning’s research focuses on the long-term consequences of childhood sexual abuse. She has published articles and presented at national and local conferences on the topic. Her book, “Psalms of My Heart,” chronicles her personal story with abuse and was published by Red Tent Living in 2016.
The Faculty Lecture Series provides students and other members of the Milligan community a glimpse into the active world of academic research and writing at Milligan. The lecture is free and open to the public.
