Sophomore Izzy Lewis had a three-goal hat trick and the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones scored a 3-3 draw with Westridge in nonconference girls soccer action on Thursday at Citizens Bank Stadium.
Lewis scored in the 62nd minute with an assist from senior Kaiya Simmons to give EHS (4-7-1 overall) to a 3-2 advantage but the Lady Wolves Sunny Iacino got the equalizer in the 68th minute for the tie.
In describing the play Lewis said, “I got to the box and I knew she was going to cross it in. And then I knew I had to take the shot or I would be shut down, so I took the shot and tried to angle it to the corner.”
Iacino got Westridge on the board in the sixth minute as the Cyclone backline failed to clear the ball in front of goalkeeper Abbie Krawcyzk and Iacino nudged it into the net. Lewis scored on a left footed goal in the 18th minute as she drove past a Wolves defender at the 20-yard line and as she crossed into the penalty area fired a high arching shot over the head and hands of GK Lindsey Chapman for a 1-1 contest.
EHS missed on a pair of penalty kicks with Simmons and Mollie Johnson both coming up empty on point blank tries but in the 28th minute Lewis drilled a PK try into the Westridge net for a 2-1 Cyclone halftime lead.
“The first two misses were a little disappointing, but we stopped one as well,” Lady Cyclones head coach Lauren Meier said. “Abbie saving that one on their PK was amazing. I couldn’t ask any more from her. It was one of her season goals to stop a PK try. I was real happy with our performance. The last goal showed great awareness between Izzy and Kaiya.”
Early in the second half, the Lady Wolves took advantage of an EHS penalty when Grace Quillen struck a free kick from 39 yards out and Reese Murphy found the loose ball and scored to knot the match at 2-2 in the 50th minute of play.
EHS had great intensity in this one and won the possession battle as they continued to press the attack into the Westridge end of the pitch and in the 62nd minute, Lewis fired a corner kick into the Westridge goal that Chapman stopped with a high save.
EHS did not allow a clear and Simmons took possession inside the box and found Lewis unchecked on the far side. Lewis then struck a high shot past Quillen for a 3-2 EHS lead.
“I like to shoot high, it is harder for the keeper to stop,” Lewis said. “This was a pretty even game, and we brought the energy tonight as much as the other team. On the PK goal I looked right to make the keeper think that was where I was going then went left and it went in.”
Once again it was the back line failing to clear a loose ball that enabled Iacino to take possession inside the penalty area and she scored once again in the 68th minute for the 3-3 tie.
