One of the most overused songs in sports is a ballad written in 1981 by Phil Collins entitled “In the Air Tonight.” It may be, but was it ever appropriate for the match Thursday night between the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones and the Sullivan East Patriots as the Lady Cyclones showed grit, emotion, and determination and acted at times like the Lady Patriots had done them wrong. The Lady Cyclones won their match against a Lady Patriots team that was undefeated in district play; setting them down 25-20, 25-22, and 25-16. The Lady Patriots led for a short time in the 2nd set down by 5, but the Lady Cyclones responded with a “not tonight” attitude! By the time the 3rd set was underway, it felt like it had a forgone conclusion to it.
On the evening, Krisalyn Elliot had 15 kills, freshman Abby Gwinn was setting the table all night for her teammates with 21 assists on the night adding to her 216 total for the season, while Zyleigh Bates and Bailee Van Huss led the way with 17 and 10 digs apiece. After the contest, head coach Carley Williams spoke about the strides her team is making, “I’m so proud of the growth these girls are showing. When we played East last time, we came out with a win and even showed more growth tonight; they are the number one team in our conference, so to sweep them is huge for us,” Williams shared. The Lady Cyclones improve to 10-11 on the season and currently hold 3rd place in the district; they will host South Greene Monday night at 6:30.
