Evidence that once took hours to collect and often was missed or lost will now be more easily collected and retained by the Elizabethton Police Department as a result of the department acquiring the Faro 3D scanner purchased by funds from a grant issued by the Rural Violent Crime Reduction Initiative.

The City of Elizabethton Police Department announced in April it had received a $149,999 Rural Violent Crime Reduction Initiative (RVCRI) grant. The funding will be used to support a two-year program to combat violent crime. The scanner was a second item the grant helped to purchase as the department also purchased automated car plate scanners.

With the Faro 3D scanner, officers now have an additional tool as the Faro will assist in documentation of fatal crashes, murder cases, and other major crime scenes helping to save time and more efficiently maintain evidence documentation.

“At crime scenes time is of the essence as evidence not properly documented could potentially be lost forever,” said EPD Captain Elonza Perkins.

Rather than officers using paper and pencil and measuring tapes to draw a diagram to document a crime scene, they will deploy the 3D scanner to document everything at the scene.

“This is truly a game changer for our officers and investigators,” said Perkins.
