It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Betty Benfield, at the age of 92. She peacefully left this world on September 20, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.
Betty Jean Peters was born on June 2, 1931, in the Hunter community of Stoney Creek near Elizabethton, Tenn. She was the daughter of Gordon B. Peters and Sarah “Jennie” Morrell Peters.
Betty made her home in East Side for six decades, but she also followed her husband on many construction projects in about a dozen states, a testament to her unwavering support and commitment to her family.
Throughout her long and fulfilling life, Betty touched the hearts of everyone she met with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love. She was a devoted wife to Floyd Leonard Benfield, who preceded her in death in 1995, and together they shared 45 years of cherished companionship. Mother will find perpetual rest by the side of her husband at Happy Valley Memorial Cemetery.
As a mother, Betty was a source of endless love, support, and guidance to her children, Leonard “Keith” Benfield, Gregory Gene Benfield, and Robert Charles Benfield. Her nurturing spirit and wisdom left an indelible mark on their lives, and her legacy will continue through her five grandchildren, Holly Channon, Jacob Benfield, Joshua Benfield, Jonas Benfield, and Tara-Jean Solomon, and seven great-grandchildren.
Betty had a passion for wearing ball caps, taking long walks, and hosting Sunday dinners with family. She pursued these activities with enthusiasm and skill. Betty found joy in staying connected with the friends she made while traveling to our father’s job sites, and her company assured plenty of laughter. Her zest for life and adventurous spirit inspired those around her.
Betty found solace, strength, and fellowship in her faith. Before her illness she attended the Lynn Avenue Church of God.
In her later years, Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, sharing stories, and creating lasting memories. Her wisdom, grace, and unwavering love will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Betty was preceded in death by her son, Leonard “Keith” Benfield, who passed away on October 16, 2022. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn Manning, and her brothers, Paul Myers and Charles “Dick” Peters. Betty’s sister Virginia (“Pidge”) Lancaster of Stoney Creek survives her.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and medical staff who provided compassionate care to Betty in her final years.
A celebration of Betty Benfield’s life will be held on Saturday, October 7, at 927 Walker Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carter County Emergency Rescue Squad in her memory.
Betty Jean Peters Benfield touched the lives of many and left an enduring legacy of love, kindness, and resilience. She will be remembered fondly and missed deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Condolences may be sent to the Benfield Family at our website, www.memorialfcelizabethton.com
