To the Editor:
I would be remiss not to share my experience with the Carter County Search and Rescue Unit on the last day of summer. Being a member of the Back Country Horsemen of East Tennessee with knowledge of the trails on Holston Mountain, my assistance was requested to aid the rescue unit retrieve two horsewomen off the mountain.

These experienced, competent riders had inadvertently gotten off trail on Thursday afternoon and one of them had fallen while leading their horses through a very rugged section of the mountain and broke her arm.

As a result, they wisely hunkered down in place for the night. They were successfully located and brought out to the public road on top of the mountain on Friday, Sept. 22.

The purpose in sharing this story is to commend the rescue unit. They are highly professional in what they do and they do it with a passion to help those in need. They are highly equipped for performing various types of rescues and we should be thankful for them.

Another reason for sharing is to point out the need to go into the back country prepared for as many possible scenarios as possible. I know the next time I ride or hike in the back country I will be more aware of the contingencies and try to pack accordingly.
