The first Wednesday of October is a special day for law enforcement officers across the country as it is a day that has been set aside to observe National Coffee With A Cop Day. In 2016, the first Coffee With A Cop Day took place across the nation after the Hawthorne Police Department in Hawthorne, Calif., launched the idea in 2011.
Seeking to interact with their community every day more successfully was the driving force behind the idea for the department. Since then the idea has spread across the country.
With the cliche about officers and their coffee shop donuts, the day’s observance encourages local police departments to sponsor an event that will bring citizens and the officers of the department together where the communication lines between the citizens and the police can be improved to help break down some of the walls that are built in relationships between the two.
The communication allows the police departments to hear the needs of the residents they serve in person so they can better serve them. By doing so, the community will see that the police are actually more approachable and care more for their community than what the media narrative portrays.
Officers with the Elizabethton Police Department were on hand Wednesday morning at the Elizabethton Senior Citizens Center to meet with those coming to get their morning cup of coffee while also sharing some tasty morning danishes and coffee cake.
It was another example of how the EPD strives to make a connection with their community outside of responding to calls for assistance made by the citizens they serve.
