First Quarter ground game dominance

Junior RB Dominique Burleson rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns as the Bulldogs dominated the Buffaloes. Hampton held West Greene to just 39 yards of total offense with just seven yards gained on the ground.

“We have been playing a lot better on defense,” Bulldogs head coach Michael Lunsford said. “These guys don’t miss practice and they come to work every day and they have really improved.”

Hampton forced a three-and-out from West Greene on its first possession and went on a five-play, 60-yard drive capped off with a one-yard touchdown run from Burleson for a 6-0 Bulldogs lead. The ‘Dogs recovered six Buffaloes fumbles which went a long way toward their offensive success.

Senior Geno Carrico scored Hampton’s second touchdown with a 15-yard run after Grayson Young recovered a West Greene fumble. Burleson ran in the two-point conversion.

After another Young fumble recovery, Burleson scored on a six-yard run and scored the deuce as well for a 22-0 first quarter advantage.

Second Quarter is more of the same

Hampton opened the second quarter with a six play, 74-yard drive capped off with a two-yard Burleson run. The point after kick missed and the ‘Dogs led 28-0.

“Our guys blocked well and we moved the ball well on the ground,” Lunsford said. “I feel like Dylan (Trivett) sometimes gets left out because of the way we have run the ball so well the last few weeks he’s not getting to do a whole lot. But he is very important to us and he is not a selfish player and he is a team guy.”

Hampton had 323 yards on the ground and Trivett was 3-for-4 passing for 84 yards with a 50-yard scoring strike to J.J. McElyea as the first half expired. After another three-and-out from West Greene, McElyea scored on an eight-yard run for a 34-0 Bulldogs lead.

Senior lineman Shayden Oliver got a chance to run the ball and he scored on a two-yard plunge as the Bulldogs poured it on and took a 40-0 lead with 40 seconds left in the half. The Buffaloes fumbled once again with Carrico recovering for Hampton and as the last seconds ticked off the clock, Trivett connected with McElyea to make it a 46-0 lead at the half.

“The line blocked well and this is a big confidence boost for us,” Trivett said. “We get a bye week this week and that will give us a chance to prepare for the last few games and continue to get better.”

Running clock in second half as Buffs get on the scoreboard

West Greene recovered a Bulldogs fumble at the one-yard line but in three tries to score Hampton pushed them back to the eight-yard line and on fourth and goal, quarterback Dawson Daniels scrambled left and flipped an underhand desperation toss into the end zone where Austin Franklin leaped high to snag to make it a 46-6 contest.

In the fourth quarter, Peyton Townsend scored on a 37-yard run to close out the scoring.
