As the moon started to partially cover the sun during an annual solar eclipse outside, the riders were inside the center enjoying breakfast as more riders registered just outside. Catering was provided by different area restaurants and the riders mingled with the center’s seniors, enjoying their time before the ride began.

Elizabethton Senior Center Executive Director Brittany Shell said, “The Center is a non-profit organization that depends on fundraising to operate and meet the needs of seniors in the community.”

The Elizabethton Senior Center began in 1968 in a house that sat on the current property. The center was established by a few seniors living in the Carter County community. Today, the center serves many of the senior citizens here in Carter County through services and programming along with housing Meals on Wheels.

Shell continued, “We are a hub of resources and connection for seniors in the community. Our services, such as Meals on Wheels, health and fitness programming, along with recreation and friendship opportunities, allow the center to be a beacon to seniors in our community. Many of our seniors who we see every day live alone, some are low income, and many would not have access to resources without the senior center.”

The Appalachian Warriors are an organization dedicated to giving back to their community through motorcycle rides. Kickstands came up at 12:00 pm with the riders heading north on Route 19 to Bristol, where they stopped to enjoy lunch and do a little more fundraising at The Mountain and then saddled up and headed back to Elizabethton to continue the event at Appalachian Sun Brewery.
