The Trefoil Society Luncheon is named after the trefoil-shaped pin Girl Scouts receive that symbolizes acceptance of ethical leadership values. The Trefoil Society provides financial support to Girl Scouts of the Southern Appalachians. Annual luncheons are held in each of the council’s three regions.
“Each year, we honor a woman in each region of our council who exemplifies the spirit of Girl Scouting,” said Lynne Fugate, CEO of the Girl Scouts of the Southern Appalachians. “Linda Moss Mines is a shining example of an educator, historian, volunteer, and a true believer that citizens should be active and engaged in their community. She believes that education is and should be a lifelong experience. Linda is an excellent example for our Girl Scouts, and we are looking forward to honoring her at the Trefoil Society Luncheon.”
Linda Moss Mines retired after 45 years as a teacher and educational administrator, the last 27 years as chairman of the History Department at Girls Preparatory School where she taught senior level AP U. S. History, AP US Government and Politics and Constitutional Law.
Linda is the official Chattanooga and Hamilton County historian; serves as Vice-Chairman of the Executive Board of the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center; Secretary, Chattanooga Area Veterans Council; Honorary Regent of the Chief John Ross Chapter, NSDAR and she represents East Tennessee on the Governor’s Tennessee Cemetery Committee.
Linda writes a weekly column for the Chattanooga Times-Free Press, and frequently appears on television, radio and at civic organizations to talk about her favorite subject . . . history.
In addition, she is Trustee and Chairman Emeritus of the Board for the Erlanger Medical Center and serves on the Children’s Hospital Foundation Board; a Board Trustee for the Sgt. York Patriotic Foundation, serves as Chairman of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County America 250 Committee and readily admits that she loves history, battlefields, great literature and museums – and is a certified artilleryman for the National Parks System.
She was recently appointed by Governor Lee to the Tennessee Social Studies Standards Committee and confirmed unanimously by the Senate and House Education Committees.
Linda Moss Mines served 13 years as a Girl Scout troop leader and is the proud mother of Jessica Mines Dumitru, a Gold Award Girl Scout.
