Hugh Young McKay, 77, of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Hermitage Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was the son of the late Virgil Hugh McKay and Thelma Elizabeth Young McKay.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents and his fourth great-grandmother, Mary Patton, and fifth great-grandfather, Robert Young Sr.

Hugh was a U.S. Veteran, having served in the Navy. He retired from CSX Railroad after 44 years. He was quiet, fun loving and loved working on the railroad. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping. He was of the Christian faith.

Those left to cherish his memory are his brother, Charlie McKay (Donna), Johnson City; sisters, Etta McKay Mays and Caren McKay, both of Johnson City; many nieces and nephews who loved him, Mel McKay, Johnson City, Chris McKay (LaVon), of Virginia, Melanie Nelson (Doug), Hendersonville, N.C., Brett Forney (Riki), Lawrenceville, Ga., Atalie McKay Balentine (Chris), Salisbury, N.C., Noah McKay (Ginny), Lexington, N.C., Lindsey McKay Calverley (Dave), Jefferson, N.C., Anthony Perrotta, Providence, R.I., Kristiana Grizzle (Stephen), Kingsport, Tenn., and Steven Perrota, Johnson City; and many great-nieces and great-nephews, Cale McKay, Caleb Ballentine, Hannah Ballentine, Ian Nelson, Finn Nelson, Jamison Forney, Wren McKay, Merritt McKay and Louis Grizzel.

The family will receive friends between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m. Thursday, November 2, at Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, Elizabethton. A service to celebrate the life of Hugh will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 3, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Pastor Jason Perry officiating. The graveside service will follow the funeral service on Friday morning at the Patton-Simmons Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association (Northeast, TN Office), 2319 Browns Mill Road, Suite D6, Johnson City, TN 37604.
