Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park has a number of events coming up this month, among them the Colonial Harvest Celebration and the Fall Fiber Show the weekend of November 11-12.
The Colonial Harvest Celebration will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Washington County Militia will gather to celebrate recent victories in the War for Independence and give thanks for a bountiful harvest. There will be demonstrations of 18th Century life and living history presentations.
The group will celebrate autumn the way it was celebrated 200 years ago at Sycamore Shoals.
In Colonial America, before Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday, each colony or community observed days of thanksgiving after the harvest was brought in or after a significant military victory. Sycamore Shoals will feature this scene of frontier harvest celebrations, enjoying a time of friendship and thanksgiving, on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free. Activities throughout the weekend will include a reading of Colonial Governor Richard Caswell’s Thanksgiving Proclamation, open hearth cooking, flintlock, musket and rifle demonstrations, 18th century artillery demonstrations, a militia drill and training and many more aspects of daily life on the colonial American frontier. In addition, the Washington County Militia will host their monthly militia muster.
The Fall Fiber Show will feature the region’s finest fiber producers and artists. The show will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Fall is the time the fiber artists plan their winter projects and handmade holiday gifts. The show will include workshops, vendors with handmade items for sale, raw fibers, and demonstrations of spinning, weaving, and more.
The show is presented by the Overmountain Weavers Guild.
The show is held inside the park visitors center.
Also coming up the weekend of Nov. 18 at the park is the Overmountain Christmas Open House.
The Watauga Valley Art League will have its Winterfest Art Show and Sale Nov. 18-26 inside the Gathering Room of the park’s Visitors Center.
