Among events at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area this weekend are the Colonial Harvest Celebration Saturday and Sunday and the Fall Fiber Show, also Saturday and Sunday.
The Colonial Harvest Celebration is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Events will be held at Fort Watauga as the Washington County Militia gathers to celebrate recent victories in the War for Independence and give thanks for a bountiful harvest.
In Colonial America before Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday, each colony or community observed days of thanksgiving usually after the harvest had been brought in or after a significant military victory.
The celebration will feature demonstrations on 18th Century life and living history demonstrations, including open hearth cooking, flintlock musket and rifle demonstrations, natural dyeing, music, Revolutionary War era battle tactics, and much more.
The weekend will also include a special Veterans Day program Saturday to honor those men who fought at Kings Mountain, as well as current veterans and armed service members.
Also this weekend, the Fall Fiber Show will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Fall is the time the artists plan their winter projects and handmade holiday gifts. Some of the region’s finest fiber producers and artists will be present.
The weeknd will include workshops, vendors with handmade items for sale, new fibers and demonstrations of weaving, spinning, and more. It will be a good time to do some early Christmas shopping.
The show will be held inside the park visitor center.
Also, coming up Saturday, Nov. 18, at the park is the Overmountain Christmas Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The festive holiday gathering will feature carolers, Christmas stories, and a craft project the whole family can participate in. The show will also feature local artisans, and the park gift shop and bookstore will be open.
Also, the Watauga Valley Art League Winterfest Art Show will open Saturday, Nov. 18. The show will continue through Nov. 26, and will be held inside the Gathering Room of the park visitor center.
