To the Editor:

What a shame that Carter County does not have a White Flag Shelter.

I moved to Carter County three years ago and have come to love the area. During this time I have seen an increase in the number of homeless people.

I am troubled by the lack of assistance the homeless population receives in this county.

I have become involved with an amazing group of people who have a huge heart for the homeless. We do not promote handouts, but hands up! We work hard to help these citizens, who have fallen on hard times to rebuild and move to a better place. It’s hard as we rely on kind-hearted community souls who give from their hearts. The person who created this group has worked tirelessly to achieve her God-given passion. God has been opening doors, resources, and bringing individuals who share her and our passion. But, there is still much to be accomplished as this is a never-ending struggle.

I am asking the county mayor and those in positions of leadership to be a part of our White Flag Shelter. Cold weather is here. Put yourself out in the cold for a few minutes, then imagine being in freezing temperatures for days. There is an immense need.

I hope and pray that those in leadership positions can come together and help resolve this issue. When you know better, do better. We need a White Flag Shelter in Carter County now.

Sincerely,

Marta A. Soto
