Elizabethton native Danny Fetzer will be honored at a concert, which is free and open to the public. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 25, at the Samuel Powhatan Carter House Pavilion (formerly Carter at Main) located at 829 E. Elk Ave., Elizabethton, from 2 until 3 p.m.
Dr. Fetzer passed away in Oak Ridge in March 2017. A native of Elizabethton, he was the son of John W. Fetzer Sr. and Helen Fetzer. He graduated from Elizabethton High School and ETSU. Alongside a distinguished 36-year career in computer science, Danny was a renowned musician. He played trombone in ETSU jazz bands and was an accomplished pianist, collaborating with numerous well-known bands.
The event will accept donations for Assistance and Resources Ministries (ARM) of Elizabethton, supporting those in need. ARM, established in 1991 by the Carter County Ministerial Association, coordinates benevolent aid among area churches and individuals. It serves as a centralized resource for assistance in Carter County, sourcing resources through donations, financial gifts, grants, volunteer workers, and other means to aid the needy.
The special program will showcase the local Christian musical group “Lifted,” featuring Loretta Bowers, Tony Rominger, Fred Goodwin, Pat Kelly, and Howard Bloom.
Loretta Bowers, the lead singer of “Lifted” and an Elizabethton native, has performed professionally since her teenage years. She notably sang at the opening of Freedom Hall in Johnson City alongside Bob Hope and showcased her talent on Broadway and various renowned musical stages.
Tony Rominger, an East TN native, collaborated for years with Danny Fetzer in “Indigo Spring,” where Danny played keyboards. Rominger has professionally played tenor saxophone with well-known bands and musicians like Chuck Berry, Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose, Cyndi Lauper, and Joan Jett.
Fred Goodwin, a multi-instrument musician and keyboardist, a native of East TN, taught at ETSU’s Department of Music. He boasts a career playing alongside Frank Sinatra Jr., Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, and Wilson Pickett, among others, supporting Loretta and the Bowers family for over five decades.
Pat Kelly, originally from Akron, Ohio, drums professionally in various Tri-Cities groups, including The Jonesboro Rhythm Express and the First Christian Church praise band.
Howard Bloom, hailing from New York and Florida, contributes bass to multiple groups in East Tennessee, including the Jonesboro Rhythm Express, the Tri-Cities Jazz Orchestra, and the First Christian Church praise band.
