JONESBOROUGH – David Crockett guard Brody McGuire knocked down a three with 2.1 seconds left in the Pioneers game with Hampton on Thursday night but a foul was called before the shot so McGuire went to the free throw line and hit one-of-two to give Crockett a 53-52 lead.

Tuff Robinson was not able to get his half court fling to drop so the Bulldogs fell by one point.

“We lost to Daniel Boone by a point last week,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “Once we get our injured players back we’ll be able to get into our rotation. Crockett is a real good team, they shoot the ball well and we played hard. We took five charges in this game.”

Missing in this one were Dylan Trivett and Geno Carrico and the ‘Dogs went to battle with a rotation of just seven players. The Bulldogs (1-2 overall) took a 13-12 lead after one quarter was in the books with Chance Point scoring five first period points.

Hampton held a slender 25-24 halftime lead with Jayden Nave’s seven points leading the way.

The teams were tied at 38-38 going into the fourth quarter when Colin Beason and Reagan Cash each hit buckets for the Pioneers for a 42-38 advantage. Nave connected on a bucket in the paint for Hampton but Bradley Gouge hit a deuce for Crockett that made it a 44-40 contest.

“We came on the road and played a good game against a tough opponent,” Smith said. “We got a couple of players in foul trouble and Nave fouled out.”

The game continued to go back and forth with neither team opening more than a four point advantage until Gouge connected on a trey for Crockett which swayed the point in the Pioneers favor. Michael Anspaugh hit a deuce and Hayden Campbell and Cash exchanged buckets as Crockett led 51-49 with 1:45 showing on the game clock.

“That three gave them the points we needed,” Smith said.

Anspaugh tied the game at 52-52 with a deuce with 12.8 seconds left in regulation but the ‘Dogs had left too much time on the clock.
