Musicians and singers will join worshipers for a midnight mass Sunday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church singing “Go Tell It On The Mountain…Jesus Christ is Born.”
“It’s a millennia-old tradition,” said Father Timothy Holder of St. Thomas church, located in “old town” next to the Carter County Courthouse. “Christians gather and exclaim in song, proclamation, dance and celebration, the message of ‘Go Tell It On The Mountain, Jesus Christ is born.’”
The Bowers sisters, Lorettta and Teresa and their families, and St.Thomas’s own parish musician, Annie Hopson, along with wonderful singers and families from other traditions will offer hymns and praise from classical, traditional, African American, Latin, Bluegrass, and Appalachian music. Area musicians are invited to join in and local pastors are especially invited to be recognized and appreciated. “We will be singing into the night and morning, thanking God for his Son born to love and cherish all humanity, creatures, and creation,” said Holder.
Doors will open at 11 p.m. with music, followed by Holy Communion at 11:30 a.m.
