Officers of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a theft from a Roan Mountain bank that occurred in the early morning hours on Wednesday.
Around 2:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the branch office of Carter County Bank located at 8257 Highway 19E in Roan Mountain in reference to a silent alarm for the ATM machine being triggered. Upon arrival, officers located a bunch of wires coming out of the ground where the ATM had been located. Officers were able to follow marks in the pavement around the building and located the ATM laying on its back next to a skid steer at the rear of the bank.
According to officers, the evidence at the scene indicated that the skid steer had been used to knock over the ATM and then move it behind the building. The ATM had been opened and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from inside the ATM.
The bank is currently undergoing construction and the skid steer used to knock over the ATM was on the scene as part of the equipment being used by the company performing the construction.
Through surveillance video, the suspect’s vehicle has been identified as a light colored, possibly silver or white, two-door passenger car with a black rear bumper.
Anyone who has any information regarding the theft is asked to contact CCSO Investigator Preston White at 423-542-1851. Residents and businesses in the area who have outside security cameras are asked to review their security footage around the time of the incident and if any suspicious activity is noted they are asked to contact CCSO Investigator Preston White at the above number.
