Florence Harmon, a resident of The Waters of Roan Highlands, will celebrate her 100th birthday January 14.
A resident of the Roan Mountain nursing home for over two years, Mrs. Harmon is a lifelong resident of Avery County, N.C., formerly residing in Cranberry, N.C. She was able to stay at home until she was in her late nineties.
She was married over 60 years to John Harmon and was a housewife. A daughter-in-law said Mrs. Harmon was a very devoted Christian and lived her faith. She was a long-time church member of the Church of Jesus Christ in Newland, N.C., and also from time to time attended the First Apostolic Church in Johnson City.
She was the mother of seven children, three of whom are still living. They include Bobby, Dale, and Priscilla Letterman.
Before going to the nursing home, Mrs. Harmon enjoyed sewing, making quilts and gardening.
The family plans a birthday celebration at The Waters of Roan Highlands on January 20 from 3 to 5 p.m.
