Betty Rose Greenwell Markland, 90, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 22, 2024, at her home. Betty was born in Carter County to the late William Albert Greenwell and Virginia Holloway Greenwell. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clarence Markland; four brothers, William Robert Greenwell, Millard Greenwell, Doran Greenwell and Jackie Greenwell; and two sisters, Mary Greenwell and Patsy Freeman.
Betty retired from North American Rayon Corporation and was a member of Upper Gap Creek Free Will Baptist Church. Betty loved to work in her yard and in her garden, although her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Those left to cherish and remember Betty include her sons, Steve Markland and wife Patty and Thomas “Tommy” Markland, all of Elizabethton; her daughter, Joan Hathaway of Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Josh Hathaway, Jake Hathaway, Steven Markland, Chad Markland, Dalton Markland and Bo Markland; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Susan Dougherty and Ruby Louise Ray, both of Elizabethton; a brother, Tommy Greenwell of Delaware; and a special friend, Christy Markland of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Betty Rose Greenwell Markland will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 25, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Rev. Dale Blevins officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service, or at the residence at any time. The graveside service will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery in Butler, Tenn. Active pallbearers will be Betty’s grandsons.
