Winter’s hibernation is lifting along the southern parts of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.), while other sections of the trail are still blanketed with snow. Whether you’re dreaming of spring or beginning to watch it unfold, there are purposeful times outside on the trail in early 2024.
One is the Watauga Lake Area Trail Care Day March 9. Hikers will enjoy a day hike on this section of the Appalachian Trail while helping out with some routine maintenance. Some minor tasks might include cleaning waterbarts and steps, cutting back vegetation growing into the trail, dismantling fire rings, or painting shelters.
All tools and training will be furnished, no prior experience is required.
Those planning to participate are asked to meet at 9:30 a.m. in Hampton. The event will continue through 2 p.m.
The event is sponsored by the Tennessee Eastman and Canoeing Club.
Please be sure to wear long pants and sturdy boots. Bring plenty of water and snacks for the day, lunch, sunscreen, bug spray, a rain jacket and personal work gloves.
Advanced registration is needed. The AT Conservancy operates out of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
