Alton Weaver Wallace Sr., 86, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease on February 11, 2024. Alton was born to loving parents, Goldie and Arnold Wallace, on July 2, 1937. Alton was preceded in death by his mother, father, sister Donnie Murphy, brother Eddie Wallace, and wife Joanne Gouge.

He is survived by his sons, Alton Wallace Jr. (Stacie) and Nathan (Carolyn); grandchildren, Samantha, Zachary (Romlhy), Miles and Cleo; brother-in- law, Bob Murphy; and brother, Romley.

Alton graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1960 after attending Elizabethton High School. He was a past member of Old 76 Masonic Lodge, member of the Calvary Baptist Church, and Central Florida Baptist Church. He served in the TN National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserves.

A proud distinction, Alton was the 1st Eagle Scout in Elizabethton, Tenn.

Always proud of his hometown, he made sure his family made annual visits to enjoy time together and soak in beautiful East Tennessee. Nothing topped off a family visit better than a meal at Ridgewood BBQ, a movie at the Bonnie Kate Theatre, or riding bikes along the Doe River. A quaint town from which many generations hail, and where many more will come to love.

Alton’s passions were reading history, making memories while traveling with family, and watching old western movies. Until his last days, he always enjoyed a John Wayne “shoot em up.” A fan of 50’s rock and roll, those at the top of his list were Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

An avid self taught golfer, Alton enjoyed the game despite an odd, quick, back swing. He made sure that back swing was not passed down, and spent many years with his sons on various golf courses.

Alton worked in various roles in the transportation industry including sales, national accounts manager and head of regional operations, ultimately retiring from Consolidated Freightways after a 57-year career. A stern leader, his determination was not often questioned. A person with endless perseverance, he worked through life’s challenges and often shared his hope for a bright future for all of his family.

Alton divided his time between Orlando, Fla. and Elizabethton, Tenn., enjoying well deserved retirement years in the changing seasons that added to his wisdom, charm and character.
