The North Greene Lady Huskies knew if they had any chance against the Cloudland Lady Highlanders in the Girls District 1-1A championship game being played at Happy Valley High School, they had to sink their teeth in early and stay on the attack.

It worked for one-quarter of play before the Lady Highlanders yanked the teeth out of the Lady Huskies in the second period on their way to a convincing 52-26 victory to earn a home game in the region Friday night on Roan Mountain.

After North Greene jumped out in front of Cloudland 10-2 early in the first quarter, the Lady Highlanders fought back to trail only 12-6 at the end of the first quarter.

From there on, it was all Cloudland as the Lady Highlanders held the Lady Huskies to two points in the second quarter, five in the third, and seven in the fourth to take the victory.

Although tournament MVP Saharra McKinney didn’t lead the team in scoring, it was the little things that the senior did that played huge dividends for Coach Matt Birchfield’s squad as her defensive effort, ball handling, and rebounding were something that North Greene had no catalyst for.

Makenzie Street led the Lady ‘Landers with 14 points with 10 of those coming in the third quarter when she recorded 10 of the 17 points Cloudland had.

Makinna Shell and Ryan Turbyfill added 10 points apiece. McKinney finished her night offensively with eight points while post Izabella Christman dropped in seven points.

Ewyon McCoury added a three-ball to cap the scoring off.

Ella Head paced the Lady Huskies with 14 points on the night.
