Your home for the arts this spring

As the days get longer and the weather begins to turn warmer, East Tennessee State University’s campus is blooming with arts activities.

ETSU is home to a thriving arts community, and the university invites the public to visit campus and take in art exhibits, concerts, films and more this spring.

 

Department of Music

• The ETSU Orchestra will perform at State Street United Methodist Church, 650 Valley Drive, Bristol, Va., on March 1 at 7:30 p.m.
• A BucsWorth Tenor Bass Choirs Collaborative Concert with the Virginia Glee Club will be held March 2 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 105 S. Boone St., Johnson City.
• The internationally acclaimed ETSU Chorale will travel for a concert tour of Ireland from March 9-19, and a Send-Off Concert will be held March 3 at 3 p.m. at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 S. Roan St., Johnson City.
• Adjunct faculty member Monica Song will perform a Faculty Piano Recital on March 3 at the Martin Center for the Arts.
• A Percussion Studio Recital will be held March 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Martin Center.
• The Opening Bands Concert featuring the ETSU Wind Ensemble and Concert Band will be held March 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Martin Center.
• Dr. Steph Frye-Clark will perform a Faculty Tuba Recital on March 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Martin Center.
• BucsWorth and Belles in Concert featuring the Department of Music’s tenor/bass and soprano/alto choirs will be March 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Martin Center.
• Perfect Harmony, a concert showcasing ETSU’s a cappella ensembles Greyscale, Swashbucklers, Ascension, Harmonium and The Buc Four, will be held March 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Martin Center.
• Three student recitals will be performed March 24 at the Martin Center: Kerri Draskovich, flute, at 2 p.m.; Kate Boundy, clarinet, at 5 p.m.; and Bowen Yi, piano, at 7:30 p.m.
• Sam Mears will perform a Student Trumpet Recital on March 25 at the Martin Center.
• A Flute Duet Recital featuring ETSU faculty member Roya Farzaneh and guest artist Nancy Scheeloch-Bingham, accompanied by pianist Monica Song, will be held March 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Martin Center.

 

Reece Museum

• Current exhibits at the Reece Museum include “Storehouse of Knowledge: Recent Acquisitions to the Reece Museum’s Collection,” which runs through March 22; “View from West Poplar Street to Gilmer Park,” which closes March 8 and showcases paintings by ETSU alumnus Bill Nickels; and “Embodying Culture: Women in Appalachia,” which continues through July 5. Receptions for these exhibits will be held Thursday, Feb. 29, at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.

 

ETSU Art Galleries

• The “Positive/Negative 39 National Juried Art Exhibition” continues through March 8 at Slocumb Galleries in Ball Hall, with a reception and juror’s lecture by Michelle Fisher, curator of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, planned for March 7 from 5-7 p.m.
• The Tipton Gallery in downtown Johnson City is hosting an MFA Exhibition by Ben Conley through March 8, with a reception on March 1 at 6 p.m. as part of the city’s First Friday celebration; an MFA Exhibition by Ursula Gullow from March 11-22 with a reception on March 22 at 6 p.m.; a Digital Media Students Exhibition from March 18-29; and an MFA Exhibition by Delaney Rogers from March 25-April 5.

 

Martin Center for the Arts

• The Martin Center’s 2024 Spring Broadway Season continues March 18-20 with the 50th Anniversary Tour of “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
• “Nocturne: The Paramount Chamber Players’ Winter Concert,” featuring works by Bloch, Faure, Grieg and Ravel, will be held March 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Martin Center.
• “Blippi: The Wonderful World Tour” comes to the Martin Center on March 7 at 6 p.m.
• “The Simon & Garfunkel Story” will be presented March 15 at 8 p.m.

• The Symphony of the Mountains presents “Portraits in Sound: Elgar’s Enigma Variations” on March 16 at 7:30 p.m.

 

Cinema at ETSU

• The 52 Film Festival, in which teams have 52 hours to write, shoot and edit a short film with a public screening at the end, will be held March 1-3 at the Wallace Theatre, 215 E. Main St., Johnson City.
• The First Friday Screening Series: Arthouse Academy will screen “Anatomy of a Fall” on March 1 at 7 p.m. at the Bud Frank Theatre, Gilbreath Hall.

 

Bluegrass, Old-Time and Roots Music Studies

• The Old-Time Bands of ETSU’s Bluegrass, Old-Time and Roots Music Studies will host and perform in a Square Dance event on March 6 at the Down Home, 300 W. Main Street, Johnson City.
