Dear Rev. Graham: I’m enraged because of what some people have said about me at work – unkind and untrue accusations. Is it really possible to “forgive and forget?” Even as a Christian, I don’t think I’m able to do that. – F.F.

 

Dear F.F.: What is impossible with people is possible with God. He can give us a heart that loves – replacing the anger and disappointment that destroys. Jesus takes forgiveness even further. He tells us not only to forgive and forget but also to love the one who hurt us and pray for their welfare. We aren’t to erase them from our memories; we are to keep them in our prayers!

Impossible? Yes – apart from God’s help. What must we do? First, remember how generously Christ has forgiven those who crucified Him. Our sins hurt God far more than anyone ever hurt us – and yet He willingly sent His Son to die in our place so we could be forgiven. We must never forget how much it cost Christ to show us forgiveness.

We must also remember that God not only loves you, but others who have sinned. When we begin to see others through God’s eyes, we realize that our response should be a witness and testimony.

Holding on to hurt does not hurt others, only ourselves. When we turn these things over to Christ, relying on the power He freely gives, we can demonstrate the love of Christ.

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. But love your enemies, do good … hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great” (Luke 6:32–33, 35, NKJV).
