A champion’s legacy: Sharon Butler Jewett’s induction

As whispers of her impending induction into the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame at Milligan University on May 18.  Sharon Butler Jewett’s journey to greatness began on the basketball court, where she emerged as a beacon of talent for Happy Valley High School. A four-year starter, she scored over 1,000 career points, leading her team in scoring for three consecutive seasons. With accolades such as three-time All-Watauga Conference performer and honorable mention all-state recognition, Sharon’s prowess was undeniable.

But her dominance wasn’t confined to the hardwood. Sharon’s athleticism transcended boundaries, as evidenced by her remarkable achievements in track and field. With four individual Watauga titles, including two in the high jump, she propelled the Lady Warriors to back-to-back conference championships, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.

Transitioning to collegiate athletics, Sharon continued to shine brightly. At Milligan College, she adorned the softball field as a four-year starting outfielder, boasting an impressive .446 career batting average and 13 home runs, including a remarkable six in her sophomore year alone. Her capacity wasn’t limited to softball; she seamlessly transitioned to the basketball court, where she excelled as a full-time starter, leading her team in field-goal percentage and emerging as one of the Lady Buffs’ leading scorers.

With countless hours of practice, the highs of victory, and the lows of defeat,  she cherished the unwavering support of her family, coaches, teammates, and the community that had rallied behind her every step of the way.

On the evening of May 18, Sharon Butler Jewett will stand before the gathered crowd at Milligan University, a symbol of perseverance and excellence. As she accepts her rightful place in the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame, It will be a celebration of the values of hard work, dedication, and the unyielding spirit of Happy Valley.  Sharon continues inspiring future generations to chase their dreams with the same fervor and determination that had defined her remarkable journey.
