May 18th marks a significant day for the small community of Carter County for Little Milligan and Hampton. On this evening, they will honor a local legend, Mike Matheson, as he is set to be inducted into the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame at Milligan University.

Making reservations are former teammates, coaches, friends, and admirers, all eager to celebrate the achievements of a man whose name has become synonymous with sports excellence in Hampton.

Memories of Mike’s athletic skillfulness floods the minds of those in our area. Reminiscing about his days as a standout basketball player for Hampton High School, where he left an indelible mark on the court. His junior year, he had steered the Bulldogs to the brink of a state championship, showcasing his skills as a starting guard. The following year, he led the team with an average of 18 points per game, earning accolades that cemented his place among the local basketball greats.

But Mike’s talents weren’t confined to the hardwood. In football, he proved himself as a formidable force, guiding the Bulldogs to conference glory and a deep run in the state playoffs. His leadership on the gridiron was undeniable, his arm guiding crucial passes and his legs driving him to pivotal touchdowns, including a memorable run against Rutledge that sealed a playoff victory.

For 27 years, he has overseen the prestigious East Tennessee Amateur, ensuring its status as the region’s premier golf event.
