GREENEVILLE — Contractors working with the Cherokee National Forest have initiated operations at Horse Creek Campground on the Unaka Ranger District. However, the opening of the campground and day use area adjacent to the dam will be delayed until the completion of the ongoing work to ensure worker and public safety.

The primary task involves the removal of both the dam and the low water ford. Once the low water ford is eliminated, only walk-in tent camping will be available upon the campground’s reopening. However, the trailhead and day use area near Sampson Mountain Wilderness, along with the parking facilities, remain accessible.

The decision to undertake this project stems from the deteriorating conditions of both the dam and the low water ford. The dam reservoir currently holds an estimated 800-1000 tons of sediment and is showing signs of structural failure. Similarly, the low water ford is susceptible to flooding during periods of high-water events, leading to camper strandings and hindrances in emergency vehicle access to the campground vicinity.
