The Jonesborough Repertory Theatre invites you to enjoy the presentation of one of Stephen Sondheim’s most well-known musicals, INTO THE WOODS, running May 17 – June 2. Through innovative lyrics and music, an incredibly talented cast brings this extraordinary adventure to life.

 

The story takes you on the journey of several fairytale characters as they discover that wishes which come true also come with consequences.

 

“I really enjoy theatre that thoroughly entertains you while at the same time encouraging you to think, wonder, and personally relate to the characters,” said music director, Joy Nagy. “INTO THE WOODS is a marvelous example of this, through Sondheim’s use of musical motifs, rhythmic patterns, and brilliant lyrics to convey timeless and relevant themes.”

 

Storybook personalities including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Jack (of the Beanstalk) set off “into the woods” with high hopes of fulfilling their dreams. As their stories are interwoven, however, these familiar tales quickly become something deeper and much more unpredictable.

 

“Although these are fairy-tale characters,” continued Nagy, “they are imperfect, complex, and ambivalent, and each role goes on an individual journey of self-realization and compassion. I love the combination of humor, danger, surprise, and pathos in the script that takes the audience through the emotional spectrum. The musical score is challenging and intricate, with so much to say, and I’m very excited to share it with the community.”

INTO THE WOODS is written by James Lapine, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. This show is directed by Pam Johnson, music directed by Joy Nagy, and choreographed by Lindy Ley. Cast members include Riley Brooks, Maggie Carpenter, Brenden Christie, Steve Church, Kelsey Cullop, Liz Dollar, Angela Grigsby, Madeleine Haagen, Shawn Hale, Katie Hall, Riley Hamant, Steve Humphrey, Ryan Jamerson, Rebecca Latham, Hannah Love, Aden Moore, Kate Palmer, Sarah Robinson, Anna Shelton, and Olivia Smith.
