Mr. James Albert “Jim” Kent, formerly of Elizabethton and a resident of Colonial Hill Retirement Community, Johnson City, entered eternal rest on Sunday, May 12, 2024.

A lifelong resident of Elizabethton, Mr. Kent was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Peggy Jean Howington Kent. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Grover C. and Grace Kent; four brothers, Grover, Ruben, Calvin and Jack Kent; and one sister, Shirley Wiseman.

Mr. Kent was a 1948 graduate of Elizabethton High School. He graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1960. He served his country in both the United States Air Force (Active and Reserve) and the United States Army Reserve. He retired from 40 years of military service in October 1990. He was employed as an Insurance Claims Adjuster and Claims Manager for 30 years, working in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

Mr. Kent was an active member of First Christian Church in Elizabethton from 1952 until the present.

Survivors are a daughter, Janet Kent of Radcliff, Ky.; a special daughter, Deborah Arnold, also of Radcliff, Ky.; three nieces, Sharon (Tom Lynch) Kent, Patti (Ken) Leonard, and Cynthia (Danny) Minton; and several other nieces and nephews. Special friends include Dr. Janice Brice Miller, John Hayes, staff and fellow residents of Colonial Hill Retirement Center, and members of First Christian Church.

The family will hold a visitation on Sunday, May 19, from 1 until 3 p.m. at First Christian Church, Elizabethton. Interment will be held on Tuesday, May 21, at 10 a.m. in the Mountain Home VA Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ken Leonard, Tom Lynch, Dr. David Mills, David Shields, Rich Rhea, and Oris Densford. Honorary pallbearers will be John Hayes and the staff and residents of Colonial Hill Retirement Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church Building Fund or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
