From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Dear Rev. Graham: Our nation is in serious trouble and doesn’t know why. There is moral debasement as never seen before in my lifetime, and we as a people are losing our freedom as we chase after more power, more materialism, and more selfishness. Can we recover? – F.T.

Dear F.T.: People are seeking various kinds of freedom. In many places around the world people are gathering in crowds and shouting, “Freedom!”

Not only do we want political and intellectual freedom, we also want moral freedom. We have sexual expression on a scale unknown in modern times. Society thought it would bring happiness, but it’s only brought discontentment, sorrow, and chaos.

A terrifying spiritual and moral tide of evil has already loosened us from our spiritual moorings. Monstrous new ideas that could easily destroy our freedoms are rushing into the vacuum. Today people are putting their hopes into more technological progress and in freedom from moral absolutes. History shows that these all fail because they’ve been powerless to change the human heart.

We’ve tried to enthrone the false gods of money, fame, and human intelligence, but the end is always the same. If we allow our Christian faith to be adulterated with secularism intermingled with a blend of humanism, we cannot stand up to a system that has vowed to bury us.

What’s the answer? There’s hope, if we will turn to God. We may think we possess many things, but it is God who owns everything, and we are but stewards of His property during the brief time we are on Earth.

Scripture teaches that the only truly free people in the world are those who have made Christ their Savior. “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32, NKJV).
