A burglary at a city residence was reported Monday evening, and officers learned a neighbor saw two men in ski masks at the home.
Elizabethton Police Department Officer Jordan Ensor responded to the home on West E Street at 7:16 p.m. on Monday on the burglary call. However, a neighbor had witnessed the men at the home hours before 911 was called.
The residents at the home told Ensor that when they returned home from work, they were told by their neighbor that two men wearing ski masks were at the back of the home earlier Monday morning.
The residents told Ensor they checked the home and found several drawers that had been gone through, but that nothing was found to be missing. An Apple iPad was in one of the drawers, and was found on the floor.
They also told Ensor they didn’t notice any forced entry to the home, but believed the men came into the house from the back garage door.
Ensor reported he then spoke to the neighbor who had witnessed the men at the home. The woman said she was on her back porch at 9:15 a.m. when she noticed two men wearing jackets and ski masks standing near a personal watercraft at the neighbor’s house.
The neighbor described one man as tall, wearing a Carhart-style jacket with a hood and a ski mask. The other man was described as short, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and a ski mask.
The neighbor said she cleared her throat to get the men’s attention. She said they looked at her, walked around to the front of the residence and continued on West E Street toward Roan Street until she could no longer see them.
She was quoted in the report as saying she then called her husband, who advised her to check the neighbor’s storage shed to see if it had been broken into. She said she did not call 911 at the time because she didn’t think they had gone into the home.
