A pair of Elizabethton men face charges after a city resident reported seeing the men burglarizing her vehicle during the early morning hours on Wednesday.

Elizabethton police arrested Brian Heatherly, 18, of 610 W. C St., Elizabethton, and Shawn Robert Shuffler, 22, of 614 W. C St., Elizabethton shortly after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, charging the two with burglary of a motor vehicle and theft from a motor vehicle. Heatherly was also charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Just minutes after 1 a.m. officers responded to a home on Bradley Street after a woman called 911 and reported seeing two white men wearing “hoodies” in front of her residence and saw one of them get into her car while the other stood by the street. After the man got back out of her car both men took off running in the direction of Cedar Avenue.

Elizabethton Police Department Cpl. Shane Darling was driving along Cedar Avenue when he saw two men walking who matched the description the woman gave of the suspects. Darling stopped to speak to the men and was able to identify them as Heatherly and Shuffler.

After speaking with Heatherly and Shuffler, police transported them back to the home on Bradley Street where the woman positively identified Shuffler as the person she saw get into her vehicle. The woman reported a round, purple iHome speaker and some loose change had been taken from her car.

“I asked Shuffler and Heatherly for consent to search their persons,” Darling said, adding both subjects agreed to be searched. “In Heatherly’s left back pocket I located the speaker that had been reported stolen. Both subjects also had a large amount of loose change in various pockets.”

Police also found a glass pipe with a green leafy residue in Heatherly’s pocket during the pat down search.

Both Heatherly and Shuffler appeared in Carter County General Sessions Court for arraignment before Judge Keith Bowers Jr. on Wednesday morning. Bowers set bond man’s bond as a $5,000 corporate bond, which means the men must go through a professional bonding company in order to post bail.

Heatherly and Shuffler are next scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on April 24.
