Quillen College of Medicine’s Class of 2020 takes part in ‘Match Day’

JOHNSON CITY — The Class of 2020 at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine found out where they were matched for their residencies upon their upcoming graduation.

Like the majority of medical schools across the country, Quillen College of Medicine cancelled its traditional match day celebration held for students and their families due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the students took part in an alternate match day experience, receiving an email with the results of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) at noon today.

The NRMP pairs graduating medical students with residency programs throughout the country. The Class of 2020 enjoyed a successful match rate, with 98.55% of the class securing residency training positions in 14 different specialties/sub-specialties at 41 residency sites throughout the United States.

The students will begin residency training programs on July 1.

“Although our students were not able to receive their matches together, the entire Quillen College of Medicine family celebrates and applauds the Class of 2020,” said Dean Bill Block. “Now, perhaps more than ever, we see the importance of the path these students are taking into a medical career. I am so proud of them for their hard work, perseverance and sacrifice that brought them to this day.”

Twenty-four students will continue their training at institutions in the state of Tennessee, and an additional 24 students will train at institutions in the Southeast. Twelve members of the Class of 2020 will remain at Quillen College of Medicine for their residencies.

Over one half of the Class of 2020 will enter primary care (family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology) and nine students will enter emergency medicine.

A number of students matched to highly competitive specialty programs including anesthesiology (4), dermatology (1), orthopedic surgery (4), ophthalmology (2), otolaryngology (1), neurology (1), and diagnostic radiology (2).

Three students will complete their residency training through military service.

Members of the Class of 2020 will attend residency at institutions across the country, including ETSU,  Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Duke University, University of Alabama, University of Kentucky, University of Tennessee, Medical College of South Carolina, University of Virginia and Wake Forest.
