Nellie June Scott (affectionately referred to as Nell and Mammie), age 89, of Watauga, Tennessee, passed away on August 28, 2022, after a long battle with heart issues.
Nellie was born on May 14, 1933, to Sam Ellison and Biddie Odom Ellison. She was born and raised at Tiger Creek in the East Tennessee Mountains of Carter County. During her twelfth year at Cloudland High School, she quit to take care of her mother who was ill.
In July of 1954, Nellie met Charles Virgil Scott, and they wed in October of 1954, going on to have two children, Sheila and Mike. As a supportive wife, Nellie continuously relocated from state to state with two children in tow, as was necessary with Virgil’s occupation as an iron worker. She gave the mother’s touch to each new home, and yet maintained the Watauga homeplace to return to from time to time.
For many years, Nellie was an integral part of Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Johnson City. She diligently served in the Women’s Auxiliary Ministry where she and Virgil particularly enjoyed feeding those in need. She also served administratively in the Cards & Flowers Ministry. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed gardening and canning food. She worked occupationally as a Seamstress as well as an Eldercare Assistant.
Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Biddie Ellison, and stepfather, Jack Campbell; Husband of 50 years, Virgil Scott; grandson, Jordan Bray; son-in-law, Bill Bray; and all her brothers and sisters: Grace Ellison Smith, Pearl Ellison, John Ellison, Robert Ellison, Fred Ellison, Reese Ellison, and Wess Ellison.
Nellie is survived by daughter, Sheila Scott Bray; son, Mike Scott and wife Brenda; grandsons, Aaron Bray and wife Traci, David Bray, Tyler Scott and wife Jenna, Anthony Mullins and wife Betsy; as well as many loving great-grandchildren, Arissa, Gibson, Ethan, Rylan, Kayen, Colton, Mason, Taylor, Tori, and Aiden.
The family of Nellie Scott will receive friends on Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The funeral will follow at 1:00 PM. The committal service will be held at 2:00 PM at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Aaron Bray, Tyler Scott, Anthony Mullins, Taylor, Jesse Marshall, and Mark Scott.
Nellie dedicated most of her life serving and helping others. She read her bible daily and especially enjoyed the book of Psalms. Now that she has passed into the arms of our Lord, we should remind ourselves that while this is the end of her physical life on Earth, it’s the beginning of an eternal and beautiful journey for Ms. Nellie June Scott.
Psalm 13:6 I will sing the Lord praise, for He has been good to me
