The Elizabethton Regional Planning Commission approved a rezoning request clearing the way for additional apartments on West G Street.
The commission unanimously approved rezoning 2006 W. G St. from R-2 medium density residential to R-3 high density residential. The property, owned by Bill and Tammy Taylor, will eventually be the home of a five-unit apartment complex.
Director of Planning and Development Jon Hartman said the zoning would match the rest of the Taylors’ properties in that neighborhood. The parcels are in the area of the old Topper Egg factory building.
Tammy Taylor explained the plan was to tear down a house that was on the property and construct the apartment complex to match the units next door.
“After that the property will be pretty much built out,” she said.
Hartman said that while planning staff approved the rezoning, he did caution the commission about expanding the R-3 zone any further.
“We don’t want to have high-density residential beside of a low-density residential neighborhood,” he said.
The motion to approve the rezoning was made by Vicky Manuel and seconded by Dena Bass.
The commission also approved an addition to Immanuel Baptist Church at 205 Hunter Ave.
The addition will enclose the current outside handicap ramp into a foyer for the church. A new covered carport area will be added at the door for members to be dropped off or picked up in their vehicles.
