Train kills man near county line

A Bristol man was killed Wednesday night after being struck by a train in near the Carter County and Unicoi County line.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. near Sutphin Road in Unicoi County near Wiseman’s.

The man has been identified as William H. Wheeler, Jr., 68, of Bristol, said Dalya Qualls, deputy communications director for the Tennessee Department of Safety.

Wheeler was walking near the tracks when the accident occurred according to Qualls.

Officers of the Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the accident Wednesday night and were still on scene during the early morning hours on Thursday.

“After further investigation, the Tennessee Highway Patrol will not work this incident as a fatality,” said THP Lt. Bill Miller. “The investigation will be handled by CSX Railroad going forward. The THP will complete an incident report only on this matter.”

Once that incident report is completed, Miller said it will be released to the public.
