Ferocious first half propels Bulldogs past North Greene, Lady Bulldogs drop close contest

The Bulldogs’ grip on first place in the Watauga Valley Conference just tightened tremendously.

Hampton (8-1, 17-5) steam rolled past the Huskies 70-49 Tuesday night inside North Greene High School.

The ’Dogs were led by a three-headed attack from Coby Jones, Nathan Norris, and Jose Velasquez. Jones spearheaded the assault with a game-high 18-points. Jones scored all of his point in the first half. Norris closed out the night with 14, while Velasquez posted 12.

The Bulldogs didn’t waste anytime. In the first quarter, Hampton blasted by North Greene 23-4. Norris led the first-quarter domination with a 3-pointer and seven points. Charlie Butler also chipped in a three in the first quarter, while Jones and Velasquez added four points each.

The second quarter saw Jones come unleashed as he posted 14 points in the period. Chris Holtsclaw popped a three in the second quarter to help the Bulldogs head into the half with a 50-16 lead.

The Bulldogs allowed the Huskies to out score them 13-10 in the third quarter, but still held a 62-29 lead heading into the final quarter.

Hampton had a lack luster fourth quarter, with the Huskies out scoring the Bulldogs 20-8. However, Hampton’s first-half blitz was enough to insulate them from North Greene’s second half rush.

With the loss, North Greene’s conference record fell to 4-5. Resting in second in the WVC is South Greene with a 6-2 record.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Friday as they host Happy Valley.

Tuesday night’s game between the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Huskies was a barn burner.

With a last second three from North Greene’s Kristen Payne, the Lady Huskies took a 36-34 Watauga Valley Conference win over Hampton.

After one quarter, the Lady Bulldogs led 16-13. However, the second frame was played close, and the teams headed to locker rooms with the game tied at 23. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Lady Bulldogs held a 29-27 edge over North Greene.

With the win, the Lady Huskies advanced their WVC record to 6-3, sliding into second place below South Greene (7-1, 18-5). Hampton’s record fell to 5-4, tying them up with Cloudland for third place in the WVC. This Friday, Hampton will host Happy Valley.
