A team was going on and another’s season was going to come to an end — and then it rained on the Elizabethton Twins and Johnson City Cardinals in game three of the opening round of the Appalachian League playoffs.
After a 75-minute rain delay in the middle of the ninth, the game resumed. An one-out hit came from Pat Kelly to give the home fans hope, but then Tanner English and Will Hurt were struck out by reliever Ismael Brito to close the game and the season for the Twins. Brito ended up with the save as he struck out three around the hit.
Johnson City had captured a 5-4 lead going to the bottom of the ninth when the umpires decided to put the tarp on the field for the impending weather at approximately 9:31 p.m.
