Hampton (8-4) charged out of the gate red hot with a 24-11 first period lead, but C-D rallied in the second quarter behind post Daniel Beddingfield and forward Seth Riddle to cut the lead to 28-26 at halftime.
Senior Stone Hutchinson opened the game with a pair of buckets and scored 11 first-half points for the Bulldogs. Post Stanley Valentine added eight first-half points for Hampton.
“They slowed it down and packed it in there with a 2-3 zone,” said Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith. “That’s something we are working on, but they kept playing hard and I am proud of how we finished. We came out and Stone Hutchinson helped us to a big lead early.”
C-D (6-5) slowed the game down and made it a half court game in the second period, holding Hampton to just four points as the fast breaking ‘Dogs were forced to play an inside game.
The ‘Dogs went to a press midway through the third period and forced a few C-D turnovers in taking a 34-30 lead, but Josh Karg hit a three point play and Tanner Barkley had a steal and a layup for a 35-34 Knights lead.
After a bucket from Tyler Moody the ‘Dogs lost Barkley in the corner and he buried a three-ball to give C-D a 38-36 lead. A deuce on a putback of a missed three by Valentine knotted the score at 38-38 with under a minute remaining in the stanza.
“We are coming together, but we aren’t playing our best by any means,” Valentine said. “We have got some things we need to clean up, but I think, like anything there are ups and downs. We are a family and we stick together through those times of ups and downs.”
With the score tied at 40-40 Karg picked up his fourth foul and Hutchinson hit one of two from the charity stripe and the ‘Dogs forced a turnover at the other end. The ‘Dogs failed to capitalize and the Knights struck quickly with Dillon Brown connecting for two and Karter Maupin’ s steal and bucket gave C-D a 44-41 lead with 5:27 remaining in regulation.
Camillo buried another trey for Hampton to tie the score at 44-44 with 4:31 left.
Coby Jones added a three-ball to give Hampton a 47-44 advantage and after a miss at the other end, Camillo won a jump ball but the ‘Dogs turned it over on the sideline.
Jones then got the ‘Dogs rolling with a fast break bucket and then followed his own miss on a three and scored a layup for a 51-46 Hampton lead with 1:15 left in the contest.
Hampton finished with free throws from Valentine who scored a game high 17 points. Hutchinson added 12 for the ‘Dogs while Karg led the Knights with 13.
