An internal investigation is underway following an allegation of inappropriate conduct by a school resource officer assigned to a city school.

On Monday, Elizabethton Police Department Chief Greg Workman confirmed his department is investigating allegations that EPD Officer Michael Sproviero, who served as the school resource officer at T. A. Dugger Junior High School, engaged in inappropriate conduct with a student at the school.

Once the allegation was brought forward, Sproviero was removed from his position as the SRO and reassigned to other duties until the investigation could be completed, Workman said.

Further information will be released once the investigation is done, Workman said, adding he hopes to have the inquiry wrapped up sometime this week.

Because the police department is currently investigating the allegation, Elizabethton City Schools Interim Director Dr. Corey Gardenhour said he could not comment on details of the incident and referred all questions to the Elizabethton Police Department.

Sproviero has served with the police department for more than 20 years.

In addition to serving as the school resource officer at T. A. Dugger, he previously served in that same role at Elizabethton High School.
