Children experienced life as a geologist at Edwards Island Park Tuesday morning during the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library’s Storytime.
East Tennessee State University geology professor Michael Whitelaw helped pre-K through fifth-grade students in the city’s Extended School Program cast and dig up fossils.
The students mixed up dental plaster to pour over molds of dinosaur fossils like the eoraptor and pterodactyl. Tubs of rock from a quarry in South Carolina were available for students to pick through for fossils.
The students went home with fossil castings and were also allowed to keep what they found while digging for fossils.
