MOUNTAIN CITY—The Lady Bulldogs’ golf duo of Hanah Brumitt and Savana Weddle struck again Monday evening as they defeated the Johnson County High School Lady Longhorns 105-115 at Redtail Golf Course.
For her second match in a row, Brumit took the medalist spot with 48, after sharing top honors with Weddle during last Thursday’s County Match at the Elizabethton Golf Course, where Weddle and Brumitt each shot 42.
With the Hampton girls’ golf squad being made up of just two players, Brumitt said there are disadvantages and advantages to having such small numbers.
“There is a lot more pressure put on you,” she said after Monday’s match. “You have no other choice of scores. When I started my freshman year, we had six girl golfers, so we had some leeway. …
“It does challenge you to do better. You can’t say, ‘Oh well she has it this week.’ So, it is easier to know what you need to work on.”
For the Lady Longhorns, Hannah Arnett netted a 55, while her teammate finished with a 60.
On the boys’ side, Johnson County topped the Bulldogs 196-212. The Longhorns’ Isaiah Penley led the way with 43, while snatching the medalist spot. Penley, who is junior and has golfed for four years, believes once things get rolling, his squad will improve.
“We are a young team,” Penley said about Johnson County. “. . . I think once we get one or two matches under our belt, we will start to get into the groove and get our scores lower.”
Also contributing to the Longhorns were Brandon Vannoy (47), Dylan Nichols (48) and Reise Stout (58).
For the Bulldogs, Nathan Norris led the pack with 49. He was backed up by Nash Eryasa (56), Gavin Hardin (53) and Dru Owens (54).
