On Wednesday, nearly 200 eighth-grade students from T.A. Dugger Junior High made the annual six-mile trek from Watauga Flats and fording the Watauga River at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area. They retraced the steps of Overmountain Men along the Overmountain Victory Trail used by patriot militia in 1780 in the Revolutionary War.
“It works out perfectly because at that point in time they’re learning about the American Revolution in their classes,” said Assistant Principal Chris Berry.
The students stopped for lunch at Watauga City Hall and throughout the hike learned about the history of the Battle of Kings Mountain from State Park Manager Jason Davis.
