Someone must have left the leash at home, because the Bulldogs were out of control Tuesday night inside Chuckey-Doak Middle School.
After a fast-paced first half, Hampton kept rolling in the last two quarters to pick up a 93-39 win over Northview during the Region 1-A Semifinals. With the win, the Bulldogs advance to the championship round and ensure themselves an East Sectional game.
“Big win,” Hampton head coach Ned Smith said. “Thank God we get another Substate game.”
The Dog pack was led by four double-digit performances. Senior Coby Jones led the way with 18 points and four 3-pointers, all of which was accumulated in the first half. Hampton’s Chris Holtsclaw posted 16 points, while Jose Velazquez followed up with 15. Nathan Norris closed things out with 13.
Knowing that the Bulldogs will get another sectional game this season, after going to state last year, relieves some of the pressure. And Holtsclaw was happy knowing Hampton has another opportunity to go back to Murfreesboro.
“We just need to come out and play ball,” he said. “The crowd is always there for us. And like every game we just need to win.”
The Bulldogs left no doubters in the stands in the first quarter. Behind three 3-pointers and 11 points from Colby Jones, Hampton rallied out to a 23-11 lead at the end of one frame. Also scoring in the first quarter was Velazquez, who chipped in nine and a three.
Hampton kept the engine revving in the second frame as it out did Northview 22-8 to take a 50-19 lead into the half. Jones posted six more points in the second period, while Norris scored six.
“We got after them defensively,” Smith said. “I thought we shot the ball better tonight. This should give us some confidence going forward.
“The fast start was good,” Smith added. “It knocked the wind out of them. We turned them over and turned it into offense.”
The second half was much like the first, with Hampton out pacing the Cougars 23-10 in the third and 20-10 in the fourth. The third frame saw the Bulldogs conduct a 15-2 run that was sparked off by a 3-pointer from Norris, before the Bulldogs took a 65-23 lead with 2:30 left to play in the third frame.
Hampton sealed the deal with a 9-point run in the last three minutes of the game.
With the win, Hampton (26-6) continued a 17-game win streak. On Thursday, the Bulldogs will face off with a hungry flock of Eagles at 7 p.m. inside Chuckey Doak Middle School.
