Feral Hogs in the Roan Highlands — Impacts, ecology and eradication efforts will be discussed at an informational session at the Kingsport Renaissance Center, Room 228, from noon to 1:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Pauline at pauline@appalachian.org.
Friday, March 11
The Elizabethton Senior Dance Club will hold a dance at the Elizabethton Elks Lodge, No. 1847, 1000 N. Sycamore St., from 7 to 10 p.m. The Rambling Rose Band will provide music. Those attending the dances are asked to bring finger foods to share. There is a $6 door charge. The club holds dances the second and fourth Friday nights of each month. All seniors are welcome.

TWRA Safe Boating Class will be offered at the Mini Dome on the ETSU campus from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for $10. Pre-registration is suggested but not required. The course covers Your Boat, Getting Underway, Operating Your Boat Safely, Legal Requirements of Boating, Boating Emergencies – What To Do, and Enjoying Water Sports With Your Boat. Contents are approved by TWRA, NASBLA and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard. Test Review will precede administration of test. Individuals who pass the test will be issued TWRA’s Boating Safety Education Certificate which is required by the State of Tennessee of all boat and personal watercraft operators born after Jan. 1, 1989. Acrylic Used as Watermedia — Join instructor Barbara Jernigan to learn some interesting ways to begin paintings and introduce texture using fluid acrylics, inks, and other water-soluble media for both abstract and realistic works. The class will be held from 9 a.m. until noon with a cost of $20 (all supplies furnished).

Driver License Safety Checkpoints will be conducted by the Tennessee Highway Patrol in Carter County through March 19, which THP has found effective at enforcing driver license laws. Roads to include checkpoints are Siam Road, State Routes 67, 361, 400 and U.S. Highway 321.
Monday, March 14
The Roan Mountain Farmers Market will have an organizational meeting at 5:30 p.m. at Cloudland High School in the Ag Room, located at the rear of the school. Growers and crafters are welcome to attend.
Red Cross Blood Drive will be held from 1:30-6 p.m. at Oak Street Baptist Church, 804 Oak St., Elizabethton.

A Country Breakfast will be held from 7 to 10 a.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church, located at 878 Highway 81N, about five miles from downtown Jonesborough. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy good food and great fellowship. The breakfasts, which are held every third Saturday of each month, consist of bacon, fresh ground sausage, eggs, pancakes, gravy and biscuits, and more. Cost is by donation.
Spring clean-up hike at Roan Mountain State Park will offer hikers an experience to get outdoors while doing a much-needed service for the park. Along the Turkey Trot Trail, hikers will install signs and will also learn about some hardwoods and park history from Ranger Keifer Helle. Meet at Park Headquarters at 1:30 p.m. For more information, contact the park at 423-772-0190.
Women’s Self Defense Class for women age 12-70 will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 815 E. 2nd St., Elizabethton. The class will be free and taught by Detective Angie Lovegrove of the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department. Lunch will be provided. Reservations are required by calling 297-8017.
Overmountain Weavers Guild Fibers Show and Sale — Don’t miss this great opportunity to visit with some of the best fiber artists of our region! If you love fibers, this is the place for you! Demonstrations include weaving, spinning, knitting, natural dyeing and more. A variety of handmade items will be offered for sale. The event will take place at Sycamore Shoals State Park from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Rocky Top Gun Permit School will hold a state certified handgun carry permit school beginning at 8 a.m. The class will be held at 135 Keenburg Road in Elizabethton. Handspinning for Beginners — Have you always wanted to learn to spin? This class is meant for those who have never used a spinning wheel before and it taught by Margaret Crouch. You’ll learn the basics of drafting wool and using the wheel to make yarn. If you have a spinning wheel, plan to bring it, along with your spare bobbins. The workshop will be held from 1:30-4 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals. Cost of the workshop is $35 which includes wool roving ready to spin. Participants who already have a spinning wheel are asked to bring it with them to class.
Carter Mansion Celebration & Militia Muster — Join us for two days of history, traditional arts and family fun as we celebrate the oldest frame house in Tennessee, and the historically prominent Carter family. Travel back to the 1780’s and tour the Carter Mansion. Witness living history reenactors demonstrating aspects of 18th century life, and see local craftsmen showcasing traditional skills. This event will be held at the Carter Mansion on Broad Street Extension from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Deerslayer 5K Obstacle Course Race and Fun Run will include 18-20 obstacles throughout a 5K race on paved and unpaved terrain. Participants must be 18 or older and may compete in the competitive race, which includes all obstacles and awards cash prizes, or they may run in the Fun Run and attempt obstacles. It will take place at Winged Deer Park in Johnson City. You must register in advance at www.jcdeerslayer.com or in person at the Memorial Park Community Center in Johnson City.
Landscape Seminar & Plant Auction — An exciting array of unusual ornamental and native perennials, trees and shrubs will be auctioned during this event. Community Plant Exchange — Sycamore Shoals State Park will be bustling this morning! Bring cuttings and potted outdoor and indoor plants, to exchange for species you don’t have — a fun way to meet other gardeners and increase your collection. This event will be held from 9-10 a.m. in the front parking lot.
Basketry – Around the Block — This basket is easier to weave than it looks. The pattern is created by using dyed reed on one half and natural on the other for each side of the basket. Dimensions: 6” cube. Bring garden or kitchen shears, an old hand towel, pencil, small measuring tape, small spray bottle of water, and strong clothespins. The instructor for this workshop is Candy Alexander. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Park and cost to attend is $22.

Young Elizabethton Professionals will hold its charter meeting at Beef’O’Brady’s at 5:30 p.m. The group will function as a young professionals branch of the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce and is open to professionals under the age of 40 to network and build working relationships in order to have greater community impact and stronger personal development.

Oil Painting for Beginners and Beyond: Lighthouse and Landscape — This beginner class is also open to anyone who has experience with oils and is taught by Rhonda Abbott. We will complete a seascape with focus on perspective and adding dynamic quality to your art! Please bring oil paint in white, blue, yellow, red, and dark brown; paper towels; linseed oil; a stretched canvas or canvas board; pencil and ruler; and at least 2 paint brushes (1 large and 1 small that comes to a point). The workshop will be held at Sycamore Shoals State Park from 9 a.m. until noon. Cost to attend is $25 (supplies not included).
