Behind the pitching of Blake King, the Rangers defeated the Cloudland Highlanders 14-4 in Stoney Creek Thursday for a non-conference meet up.
King threw for four innings, during which he struck out 10 batters against zero walks, while only allowing four hits and two runs.
“Blake started the game for us and he threw strikes,” Unaka coach Tee Blevins said. “He did his job and gave us a chance to win.”
The Rangers got started early, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Highlighting the first inning was Austin Wilson, who had two hits in the inning. He finished the game going 3-of-4 with two runs.
Unaka picked up four more runs in the second inning, with Dakota Gallimore, Isaac Hill, and Wilson each picking up a hit in the frame. Gallimore closed out the game going 2-of-3 with two runs.
With the Rangers up 7-4, Cloudland’s Noah Arnett knocked a double to bring in teammate Clay Kennedy making the score 11-1 in the top of the third. After holding the Rangers scoreless in the bottom of the third, the Highlanders picked up another run in the top of the fourth. However, the Rangers posted three more runs in the bottom.
The Highlanders were able to get two more runs in the top of the fifth.
“This is my first year with the team and I still trying to feel out what these guys can do,” Cloudland coach Jeff Peters said. “We have not been at it long. We have only had a chance to practice for a week or two.”
Today, the Rangers will host Sullivan Central. The Highlanders will pick things back up with a trip to Hampton on Monday.
