It just seems to the be the Unaka Rangers’ year.
Wednesday, the Watauga Valley Conference released its list of All-Conference honors, and the Rangers, who closed out conference play with a 9-1 record and hold a 18-6 overall record, topped the list. Unaka catcher and slugger Austin Wilson was selected as this year’s MVP. Unaka coach Tee Blevins said that Wilson has been a contributing hitter and leader for the Rangers this season.
“Wilson has hit the ball all year and has done a great job of getting on base,” Blevins said. “He has scored a lot of runs. He has been a vocal leader to our younger boys getting them ready for the game.”
Unaka slinger Abram Hill, who is 4-0 in conference play, was chosen as this season’s Pitcher of the Year.
“He has real low ERA,” Blevins said about Hill. “He has competed with every one he has faced all year long. He has dominated in the conference. He definitely knows how to pitch.”
Coach Blevins also took home a pretty big accolade himself. Blevins, who is in his fourth year coaching, was selected as Coach of the Year.
“It is definitely an honor,” Blevins said. “It wouldn’t have been possible without the boys with how they have played this year and all of my assistants with how they help out all of the time.”
Hitter of the Year was shared between North Greene’s Zane Potter and Hampton’s Jerry Lunsford. University High’s Dayshawn Hamilton took Defensive Player of the Year.
