Vets Helping Vets provides transportation for veterans

A new program founded by members of the American Legion Post 49 has been formed to assist local veterans that are no longer able to drive.
“Until recently the only resource I knew of in the area was NETRANS,” said Veterans Service Officer David Batchelder. “However, a group of local veterans is now stepping up to help out.”
Vets Helping Vets is comprised of volunteers who take veterans to doctors’ appointments, the grocery store or drug store.
Because they are using their personal vehicles, Batchelder said they are not equipped to transport motorized wheelchairs.
To arrange a ride through the program, veterans should call 423-543-0059 and press option four. The call goes will be received at Horace Mann Insurance, and callers should inform the operator he or she is calling for a ride with Vets Helping Vets.
Volunteers will need to know the time and location of the appointment, along with the veteran’s name, address and phone number. Batchelder said they will then contact a volunteer to arrange transportation. Veterans are advised to give 48 hours notice prior to the appointment.
With questions about this program or additional veteran’s benefits, contact Batchelder at 423-542-1824.
