It was a low scoring affair Friday as the Happy Valley Lady Warriors faced off with the Lady Cyclones in game five of the District 1-AA Softball Tournament at Sullivan South.
With the game tied at one in the bottom of the eighth inning, Elizabethon’s Abby McKinney got on with a single before being brought home by an RBI double by Allison Riddle for the walk-off run, giving EHS a 2-1 win.
“I haven’t been hitting the first pitch, but that one was there,” Riddle said about her game winning double. “When I was running, I was like, ‘Go, go.’ And it just went.”
The game went scoreless up until the bottom of the third when EHS senior Kennedy Richardson got things started with fire works. Richardson slammed the second home run of her career out middle field to put the Lady Cylones up 1-0.
“We were supplying the hits but they were not dropping,” Richardson said about the Lady Cyclones. “To get that hit and to be a senior, I was doing my role on the team to get things started.
“I mean, it is my second one of my career and to get it against Happy Valley is just great,” Richardson added.
The Lady Cyclones were able to hold the Lady Warriors at bay up until the six, when Happy Valley senior got a hold of one for an RBI double, bringing home lead-off batter Emily Whitaker. Whitaker’s run tied things up at one.
Working from the circle for the Cyclones was Kellie Cunningham, who tossed the whole game. Over the course of eight innings, Cunningham allowed just three hits against one walk while striking out six hitters.
On Happy Valley’s side of the mound, senior Kalee Johnson went the distance. Johnson struck out five batters while giving up seven hits and two walks.
“Kalee is after it every game,” Richardson said about hitting against Johnson. “She is a great pitcher, but we had the mindset and knew what hits we needed. We went after her.”
Monday, Elizabethton will take on Unicoi at 6:30 p.m., while the Lady Warriors return to the field on Monday at 5 p.m.
